Hello Lyonsgate Families,

Our Casa and Toddler students are looking forward to their field trip to Brantwood Farm this Thursday. Please see your Lyonsgate calendar or the Oct. 9 email “Brantwood Farms Field Trip Information” for details. Here are the highlights:

  • Casa students arrive at school per usual, by 8:45 a.m., to catch the school bus.
  • Toddler students and their parent/guardian meet us at Brantwood at 9:45 a.m.
  • Each student is asked to bring 1 or 2 durable reusable bags, clearly labelled with your child’s name, to take home apples, pumpkins, and popcorn, and must be dressed for the weather conditions.
  • Toddler students will head home after the field trip; Casa students will return to Lyonsgate for lunch and the afternoon work cycle, with pick-up as usual.
  • Please submit the trip fee prior to the trip. Thank you.

Next Friday, November 1, is a PD Day and both Lyonsgate campuses will be closed.

  • Elementary Parents: see the Elementary section for details and sign-up for learning resource conferences with Kim on Friday, Nov. 1.

Hey Everyone!

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and enjoyed spending some time with your families!

This week in the Toddler room, we introduced Towel Wringing and a glue stick craft that help the children to focus on developing their gross motor and fine motor skills with terrific success.

We have introduced a new variety of reading materials for the classroom which has appeared to heavily peak the interest of the group!

We look to continue developing these skills with the children as well as mastering previously introduced skills and look forward to another great week!

Mr. Ardrey.

Bonjour!

Hi there, I am Mme Monière, the French Assistant in the Casa South classroom. I have been so privileged to be speaking French with your children every day and so amazed at how much they understand!

I speak in French with the children, and though it might be new for some, and for others perhaps their first time hearing the language, it is beautiful to watch the new ones rely on the older students for help in translation, and with in their every day tasks. To watch a team be built in fortitude and compassion.

In our French gathering these past months, we have enjoyed singing songs in French, many of which I learned at their age, counting in French, learning each others names and greetings, and reading funny stories. I enjoy being theatrical with the children in French and hearing their laughter.

If you’d like to spark up the French in your child at home, even simply out of curiosity, feel free to ask them about:

⁃ The “Bonjours Mes Amis” gathering song.
⁃ The “Je M‘appelle” song.
⁃ The story “Clifford et le Soirée Pyjama.” This one may get a laugh. They find this story very funny. The joke in question? Clifford makes a mess and then he cleans it up. Ah, the beautiful children.

We also enjoy singing “Frère Jacques,” “Fais Dodo,” and enjoy counting up to the date in French every day.

I have noticed the children learn French well through song, and really enjoy the music. With my experience in music composition, I was thinking we could create a song as a class together, produced by the class, recorded in class, and then use it as a greeting song in our gathering eventually. This will be the work we work up to throughout the year in our gathering together, and it will act as a time capsule for the children as well. Lots of ideas and lots to learn. 🙂

It had been such a pleasure, you have such smart and lovely children, thank you for the opportunity!

Wishing you a beautiful week.

Mme Monière.

Lyonsgate Montessori Elementary students learning about the development of human communication with signs.

Last week the students received the fourth great lesson, the Story of Communication in Signs. This lesson encourages students to think deeply about their use of language, how languages expand and adapt, and the plethora of ways humans have devised to communicate. Younger students followed a timeline of oral to visual to verbal communication, considering the use of gestures and sounds, cave paintings, ideographs, and the creation of written alphabets. Students familiar with the timeline of human communication focused on other aspects of written language, such as the use of different letter cases or tracing the emergence of modern English from other languages in history. Language work is a core part of each child’s day at school as an independent area of study, as well as an essential tool for learning in all areas. From phonics and handwriting, vocabulary and grammar, sentence and paragraph development, to research, report-writing, and essays, language studies are always happening in the Elementary classroom!

Have a great week,

Marissa and Michelle.
